Summary - Advantages and Benefits of Modern AC Traction Technology - Refurbishment and New Locomotives

Presenter: Mathias Nuendel

In March 2003 Australia’s largest provider of freight transport, Queensland Rail, entered into a contract with Siemens for a traction system upgrade of three 3100/3200 Class electric locomotives into prototype 3700 Class locomotives. After successful trial runs, where the locomotives demonstrated that 3 units equipped with Siemens new AC traction systems can pull the same train previously hauled by 5 locomotives with DC traction system, the railway took up the option of the initial contract to equip further 60 units in mid 2005. In order to keep up with the increasing demand for traction power, 20 new 3800 Class electric locomotives were ordered in March 2006 and this order was extended to 45 units in mid 2007.

This article explains the motives, main requirements and performance criteria for the upgrade and the purchase of new locomotives with Siemens AC traction systems.

Focus is given to the description of the new traction system components as well as the features that enable significant advantages and benefits over the conventional units.

Overall, the performance criteria for the new AC traction systems were met or exceeded. Both, the refurbished and the new locomotives will not only provide major economical advantages to the customer, but also improve reliability, cab ergonomics and facilities for the drivers, in addition to significantly reducing the impact on the environment.
