Summary - Biodiesel Project

Presenter: Flaviana Coelho

Biodiesel research is important for environmental and social reasons and both aspects are equally important due to Vale’s large fuel consumption.

The purpose of this work is to evaluate through laboratorial, load and field tests on representative equipment of the fleet, the impacts that the use of B20 mix may have in power generation, fuel efficiency, locomotive maintenance and pollutant emissions.

The results of the performed tests show that the use of biodiesel causes an increase in fuel consumption when compared to diesel, which is significant when we talk about hundreds of millions of liters per year. However, it also indicates a decrease in pollutant gases emission with no variation in power generation and no impacts on maintenance whatsoever.

This was the first test regarding the use of biodiesel in locomotives made in Brazil and also one of the first of its kind in the world since only in that same year a few other similar tests started in other countries.
