Summary - Network Optimisation Using Integrated Scheduling and Driver Advice Systems
Presenter: Dale Coleman
This paper outlines the development of FSM an integrated technology from two separate commercial products Freightmiser® & Schedulemiser®. The combined platform allows the fuel saving & train pacing capabilities of Freightmiser to be optimised with respect to other trains using Schedulemiser's dynamic capability to determine the best overall timetable & instructions for each train.
FSM provides a unique solution to Australian and International freight rail operators through the targeted application of research, development and technology to increase the efficiency of their operations. The offering is unique in that it combines the macro and micro realms of optimisation at the network and train level respectively. It focuses on long-haul freight addressing the specific need to lower one of their main variable operating costs - energy, while maximising the availability and utilisation of their assets. Additionally, the smarter movement of trains through a network coupled with driving them with more ‘smarts’ results in significant GHG abatement.
The challenge of integrating two disparate systems is considerable, including but not limited to: the reconstruction of component parts to allow for systems integration, enabling near real-time capability onto Schedulemiser, facilitating the communications infrastructure for the backend flow of data and finally, the development of mechanisms and protocols to support the information exchange.
