Summary - Implementation of S&OP: Case Vale Logistics

This paper presents the benefits of Sales and Operations Planning process (S&OP) at Vale, a world leader in iron ore and pellet production and commercialization, as well as being the most significant Brazilian logistics service provider. S&OP appears to be driving logistic process benefits such as aligning targets and financial goals in order to create a single, achievable plan not only for iron ore but also for general cargo, maximizing asset capacity utilization.

The process was defined based on best practices and all activities were structured in 6 steps (demand planning, programming, presentations drafting and validation, preparatory S&OP meetings, Executive S&OP meeting; and release of the monthly plan providing a clear view of the monthly planning process to all interfaces. Evaluation of the process has shown that with high level executive buy-in and support, the S&OP process used in conjunction with financial plans and performance indicators, has provided world class attributes to Vale’s business.
