Message from the Conference Chair

The unprecedented response to the CORE 2008 conference has confirmed for us the importance of rail as the solution to the challenges of both urban transport and major freight supply chains.

This year's conference theme - Rail, the core of integrated transport - reflects the growing role of rail as an integrated transport system, and as one of the solutions to the environmental and population pressures faced by modern society.

We have secured a range of national and international speakers who will explore issues such as urban rail and its role in integrated transport and land use planning. The role of rail in moving freight cannot be overstated, and the conference will also focus on rail as a major bulk hauler and on interstate intermodal transport systems.

More than 70 technical sessions will be included in the conference program, and technical tours will include a tour of Perth's new urban rail network, and to the Pilbara to see first-hand the remarkable rail systems that drive Western Australia's mining industry.

We believe the activities of the conference and the technical tours will provide excellent opportunities for the exchange of new ideas and developments, and the sharing of experiences and information.

As well as the conference program, we have arranged a social program for delegates and their partners that will facilitate important networking and fellowship opportunities among colleagues.

And of course, we can also offer you the beauty and serenity of Perth as a backdrop for the conference!

On behalf of the organising committee, I look forward to welcoming you to Perth and to the CORE 2008 conference.
